Starting judo

Judo is a fun and safe sport suitable for people of all ages. There are different weight classes which means there are no size restrictions and judo is open to both boys and girls.

It's especially beneficial for children, improving:

  • Self-confidence
  • Respect for others
  • Co-ordination
  • Discipline and behaviour
  • Fitness and flexibility
  • Strength

Judo is an Olympic sport that teaches effective methods of throwing opponents to the floor and holding them down. There is no kicking or punching in judo.

New students can expect to learn judo etiquette, falling techniques, throws and holds. As their confidence and physical conditioning improves, they are introduced to gentle sparring. As children progress, new opportunities become available and they often choose to grade and sometimes compete in competitions.

The sport offers levels of activity from recreational to elite, and is an ideal form of physical education. The beginner concentrates on getting the technique right, which inevitably improves general fitness. The “judo way” is also firmly based on discipline, safety and respect. Judo therefore improves stamina, fitness, confidence, awareness and a personal sense of equality and fair play.

6th Dan, Triple Olympian, BJA Chairman

"Judo is a great sport for children of all ages to participate in for a number of reasons. Right from the very first lesson the kids are learning about elements of the Japanese culture and the history of our sport. They learn about discipline, cleanliness and etiquette and about good sportsmanship and respect for others.

"Often you can see the increased confidence in those children that once lacked confidence and self esteem. And also, Judo is truly a sport for all because it does not matter what body shape you have or level of fitness - you can still achieve.

"Judo is not only a sport it is an education for life too."
